Why CaRMS Dates Are Non-Negotiable
CaRMS runs on an annual cycle. Unlike most application processes, there is no rolling admission — miss the application window and you wait 12 months. For IMGs who have already spent years preparing, missing a deadline is a costly mistake.
The CaRMS R1 Match Cycle — Key Phases
Phase 1: Application Opens Typically September each year. This is when you upload your CV, personal letters, reference letters, and supporting documents. Programs begin reviewing files immediately.
Phase 2: File Review Period October through November. Programs review applications and issue interview invitations. IMG-designated programs look for: Canadian clinical experience, strong MCCQE scores, compelling personal letters, and reference letters from Canadian physicians.
Phase 3: Interview Season November through January. Most interviews are virtual post-pandemic. Each program conducts its own interviews — there is no standardized interview format across Canada. Some programs use MMI, others use traditional panel formats.
Phase 4: Rank Order Lists February. Both applicants and programs submit their rank order lists. This is your final opportunity to change your preferences before the algorithm runs. Think carefully — rank based on where you genuinely want to train, not just where you think you will match.
Phase 5: Match Day Typically mid-March. Results are released simultaneously across Canada. You either matched, went unmatched, or have a second iteration position available.
Phase 6: Second Iteration If unmatched in the first iteration, a second iteration runs approximately 2 weeks after match day. Available positions are programs that did not fill in the first round. Competition is lower but available positions are fewer.
What IMGs Need Before Applying
To be competitive in CaRMS, you need before the application opens in September: - MCC credentials verification complete - MCCQE Part 1 passed (MCCQE Part 2 not required for application but required for independent practice) - NAC OSCE passed - At least one Canadian clinical experience (elective or observership) - At least one Canadian reference letter
Missing any of these — especially Canadian clinical experience — significantly reduces match odds.
The Most Overlooked CaRMS Deadline
Most IMGs miss the reference letter deadline. Programs set internal deadlines for references earlier than the CaRMS system deadline. Contact your referees at least 8 weeks before the application opens — not when you apply.
Plan Around the Cycle
If you are starting your MCCQE preparation now, map backwards from the CaRMS application window. You need credentials verified, exams passed, and Canadian experience completed before September.
